Laidback Luke Brings “Real DJ-ing” To Boston

Coming from the Netherlands, Lucas Cornelis  van Scheppingen, known, as Laidback Luke is not your typical DJ. He made his name as a graffiti artist before he was into music, and has won gold medals in the World Championships of Kung Fu in Hong Kong. Anyone that listens to dance music has heard his name. The Dutch DJ is an international superstar, and has been at it for 20 years. Luke has hit every major festival, including EDC, Sensation, and Tomorrowland. His discography is a stacked list of releases, collaborations and remixes. He even has is own label, Mixmash.

Since his debut release in 1995, Luke has always been able to innovate and keep at the top of the dance music world. After he met DJ Dobre, who had been booked to play a high-school party, Luke felt his connection with the vibe & energy of dance music. This inspired him to start making his own productions and he sent them to Dobre. Dobre realized his potential, and helped mentor the young producer. Luke released his first record, Loud Flava, Vol. 1, in 1995 on Dobre’s label Touché. Luke’s infectious blend of house and techno caught the ears of the music press, with numerous releases; he had become an instantly recognizable name in the techno and house scenes. Laidback Luke was selling out shows throughout the 90’s, and in 2000 he released his first major-label single, Rocking with the Best, under Virgin Records. In the early 2000’s his sound had shifted from the techno / house sound that he was known for to the electro-house sound he has perfected today. Throughout the years he continued to build his discography, collaborating with the likes of Diplo, Example, Lil Jon, Hardwell and Swedish House Mafia. Remixes and personal bootlegs with credits from Daft Punk, Green Velvet and Depeche Mode to Robin Thicke, Madonna and Mariah Carey.

In 2004 Laidback Luke decided to make his mark on the dance music scene with his own record label, Mixmash Records. Mixmash is a label that is invested in the next generation of producers, DJs, and artists; a place where new music is discovered, and celebrated. Luke has always been involved with coaching young artists, which resulted in the “Laidback Luke Web Forum”. This became the place where many of today’s superstar producers got their start. Steve Angello, Oliver Twizt, and many others were always chatting on the forum. Mixmash was early to support heavyweights such as Avicii, Bingo Players, Knife Party, and Afrojack.

Beyond his production quality, his live shows is where Luke’s lets loose and shows us his musical versatility. Playing tracks new and old, and keeping the ‘DJing’ factor in the forefront all of his live sets, he does not take shortcuts, and shows you what “Real DJing” sounds like. Luke holds a residency at Wynn’s Surrender Nightclub, and Encore Beach club, two of the biggest nightclubs in Las Vegas. As one of the biggest innovators in dance music, Laidback Luke always keeps things fresh. The Super You & Me hero is coming to Boston Boat Cruise Summer Series on June 27th to make you dance. This is a must see DJ, and Boston is blessed to have talents such as Luke performing in our city. The year ahead is always looking up for Luke. He will certainly provide his fans new music, fresh talent on Mixmash and an ongoing effort to invest in the future of electronic dance music.
